An Exciting New Chapter for DomainTools
20 years ago DomainTools (then called “Whois.sc”) set out to help people figure out who owned what online. 10 years ago that company was bought by a small group of individuals who saw the potential of aggregating, at scale, data about domain names and DNS activity. Today we embark upon a new chapter at DomainTools as we welcome Battery Ventures as the first institutional investor in the company.
Throughout its lifetime, DomainTools has grown organically, and without any outside capital, from a niche provider of domain name Whois data to a market leader in DNS-based threat intelligence that counts nearly half the Fortune 100 as enterprise customers. Our domain and DNS-based data sets and predictive risk scoring provide unique value in proactive threat intelligence and risk assessment to organizations across the world. Our mission has always been to make the internet a safer place for all, and today we see a clear opportunity to deliver more quickly and capably on that mission.
By expanding our cloud-based data collection and processing infrastructure, improving our machine learning and predictive risk-scoring technologies, and resourcing our customer-facing teams we can accelerate value-delivery to our current and future customers worldwide. Partnering with Battery Ventures, a leading investor in successful high-growth companies, gives us more resources to continue on our mission.
This is by no means an end. It is simply a notable inflection point in the ongoing story of a company that exists to make a positive difference in the world. Many people have contributed to the success of DomainTools over a long period of time. Certainly the hundreds of employees who have passed through our (now virtual) halls, our enterprise customers who have entrusted us and helped us get better, our partners and advisors, and our many individual users and members who were the true pioneers in how our data could be used for good and continue to be great evangelists for us today. I want to take a moment to honor all of these constituents.
I’m extremely proud of the team we have built here at DomainTools and the work we do every day to deliver for our customers. I’m excited to welcome Battery into the DomainTools family and eager to partner with them as we look forward to the next 10 years of innovation and growth. Thank you to everyone who has supported us on our journey thus far. Onward.
