Although it is not necessary to be a member to use Whois search, it is suggested as with a membership your Whois search limit will increase. Moreover, much of the investigative power of DomainTools is embodied in the premium tools that are accessed from the Whois results page. These include Reverse Whois, Whois History, and others, and these research products require a Personal Membership or Enterprise subscription.
